Below is the complete email conversation that Adelaide man David Thorne claims he had with a utility company chasing payment of an overdue bill.

Hello, I am back and have read through your emails and accept that despite missing a leg, that drawing of a spider may indeed be the one I sent you. I realise with hindsight that it is possible you rejected the drawing of a spider due to this obvious limb ommission but did not point it out in an effort to avoid hurting my feelings. As such, I am sending you a revised drawing with the correct number of legs as full payment for any amount outstanding. I trust this will bring the matter to a conclusion.

Mukhtasar Saheeh AlBukhari- The Book of Imaan

Bismillah Ar-Rahman Ar-Raheem, wasalatu wasalamu ‘ala rasoolilah,

We start with hadeeth 9, the second hadeeth in the Book of Imaan :
“Narrated Abu Huraira: The Prophet said, “Faith (Belief) consists of more than sixty branches (i.e. parts). And Haya (This term “Haya” covers a large number of concepts which are to be taken together; amongst them are self respect, modesty, bashfulness, and scruple, etc.) is a part of faith.””

So… having Haya is part of our Imaan. As a reminder to myself first and foremost, let’s not forget this part of our Imaan when we’re in the spotlight, and more importantly, when we’re not.

The next hadeeth is one that we’ve all heard before, it’s something Muslims and Non-Muslims call the Golden Rule:
“Narrated Anas: The Prophet said, “None of you will have faith till he wishes for his (Muslim) brother what he likes for himself.””

An important note here is that the intention and strongest opinion is that the hadeeth refers to those of the Muslim faith, however one should wish well for other as well.

This hadeeth has so many beautiful wisdoms’ behind it.
“Narrated Anas: The Prophet said, “Whoever possesses the following three qualities will have the sweetness (delight) of faith:

1. The one to whom Allah and His Apostle becomes dearer than anything else.

2. Who loves a person and he loves him only for Allah’s sake.

3. Who hates to revert to Atheism (disbelief) as he hates to be thrown into the fire. “

The hadeeth is a great reminder of where our loyalties and intentions should be, with Allah subhanahu wa ta’ala. If we wouldn’t like someone to gossip or make fun of our mothers, then how could we not be affected when people make fun of our Lord and His messenger?

“Narrated ‘Ubada bin As-Samit: Who took part in the battle of Badr and was a Naqib (a person heading a group of six persons), on the night of Al-’Aqaba pledge: Allah’s Apostle said while a group of his companions were around him, “Swear allegiance to me for:

1. Not to join anything in worship along with Allah.

2. Not to steal.

3. Not to commit illegal sexual intercourse.

4. Not to kill your children.

5. Not to accuse an innocent person (to spread such an accusation among people).

6. Not to be disobedient (when ordered) to do good deed.”

The Prophet added: “Whoever among you fulfills his pledge will be rewarded by Allah. And whoever indulges in any one of them (except the ascription of partners to Allah) and gets the punishment in this world, that punishment will be an expiation for that sin. And if one indulges in any of them, and Allah conceals his sin, it is up to Him to forgive or punish him (in the Hereafter).” ‘Ubada bin As-Samit added: “So we swore allegiance for these.” (points to Allah’s Apostle)”

A few notes about the pledges given to the Messenger sallalahu alayhi wasalam. There were different types of pledges, some were taken from all Muslims and some were taken from certain groups and at certain times.

The companions never accepted religious pledges, they only gave religious pledges to the Prophet sallalahu alayhi wa salam. The companions only accepted political pledges, thus most pledges were given to the Khalifah.

If you avoid the major sins and fulfill the obligations upon us, then Heaven is promised for us. If we commit a major sin and are punished in this world then we’re forgiven for the sin.

And our last hadeeth of this session is one that we should always be weary of:
“Narrated Abu Said Al-Khudri: Allah’s Apostle said, “A time will come that the best property of a Muslim will be sheep which he will take on the top of mountains and the places of rainfall (valleys) so as to flee with his religion from Al-Fitan (afflictions).”

We’re surrounded so much with fitan these days that we forget to try and keep ourselves away from them when possible, let alone create fitnah!
