Fiqh asSalah ~ Lesson Six

The Salah of the Traveler

• This is one of the most emphasized Sunnah.

• It can be done collectively or individually.

• It should be performed only during the actual time of traveling.

• Neither Maghrib nor Fajr is shortened.

• Travelers are not obligated to perform Salatul Jum’ah.

Question: How long can one be in the state of traveling?!

• If praying behind a resident Imam, you should complete the Salah behind him, however, if the Imam is a traveler and he shortened his Salah, the ma”mum should complete it.

How do one preform Salatul-AlMusafir

• A traveler can shorten Dhuhr, Asr, and Isha

• Instead of praying four Rak’as, the traveler prays two Rak’as.

• They are preformed exactly like the normal prayer

The Salah of the Ill

• This is one of the most emphasized Sunnah.

Imran ibn Hussain (may Allah be pleased with him) said “I had hermorrhoids. Then I asked the prophet of Allah about the Salah, He sallah Allahu ‘Alayhi wassallam said: “Pray standing, if you cannot, then sitting, if you cannot, pray on your side.” Narrated by AlBukhari

• It allows the one who is in a state of sickness to pray while sitting or lying on their side, back or any way that is comfortable to them.

• If you cant make wudu’, then make tayam-mum.

• It is permissible to combine Salah if the needed.

• If one loses his/her conscious for some time, they must make up for all the missed Salah.

The Salah of Witr

• Ibn ‘Umar narrated that the Prophet sallah Allahu ‘Alayhi wassallam said:

End your Salah at night by an odd Salah (Witr).

• It is a Salah that is performed after Isha. It should have an odd number of Rak’ahs (i.e. 1/3/5/7/9/11)

• It is a very highly emphasized Sunnah

• It is preferred to be done at the end of the night prayer

• Usually, it is done individually but it can be done collectively.

• It cannot be done twice in one night. (No two witrs in one night).

Talq ibn Ali narrated that he heard the Prophet sallah Allahu ‘Alayhi wassallam saying: “There should be no two witr Salah in one night” Dawood, Termidhi, and Ibn Majah

• If one does it three Rak’ahs, then it can be done in the following forms:
oo Three Joint Rak’ahs without sitting for tashah-hud after two Rak’has
oo Two Separate Rak’ahs following by a 3rd separate one.

• One can read anything from the Qur’an in the three Rak’ahs. However, the Prophet sallah Allahu ‘Alayhi wassallam used to do it in the following manner:
oo In the 1st Rak’ah, Surat al-Fatiha + Surat al-A’laa
oo In the 2nd Rak’ah, Surat al-Fatiha + Surat al-Kafiroon
oo In the 3rd Rak’ah, Surat al-Fatiha + Surat al-Ikhlaas

• It is recommended to do it at the end of the night Salah (Tahaajud) unless one fears not being able to get up at night. Then do it after the Sunnah of Isha.

• If it was done in congregation, it is an audible Salah (out loud), otherwise, its will be like any Sunnah prayer.
